Kalwaria Zebrzydowska - Bernardines' Monastery

The sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska combines the elements of the cult of Christ the Suffering and the cult of the Virgin Mary. The founders of the monastery were the Zebrzydowscy family, whose representative, Mikolaj Zebrzydowski, handed in the funding documents to the Bernardines in Krakow, giving them the chapel of the Crucifixion and the ground for building the monastery with a chapel and a church. Between the years 1604 and 1609, at the Zar foothill, the monastery was constructed, according to the project of an Italian architect Jan Maria Bernardoni and Pawel Baudarth, flamish architect. Mikolaj Zebrzydowski decided to fund the building of the stations of the Way of the Cross, basing on Jerusalem. On his request, Feliks Zebrowski, an astronomer and mathematician, measured the area and located all the stations. Mikolaj Zebrzydowski also built the chapel of the House of the Viergin Mary.

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is also known for the celebrations of the Holy Week, when paschal mysteries take place, gathering more than 100,000 people each year. They are one of the oldest and biggest in Europe.

The sanctuary is also a place of the Virgin Mary's cult. A painting of Our Lady of Kalwaria, formerly belonging to the Paszkowscy family, is located in the basilica. In May 1641, Elzbieta and Stanislaw Paszkowscy noticed bloody tears falling from Virgin Mary's eyes and the painting was placed in the monastery. In 1887, the painting was crowned by cardinal Albin Dunajewski.

The monastery, the basilica and the pilgrim's park were included on the UNESCO list of cultural heritage.
