Sanctuary of Our Lady the Guardian of Faith in Bardo Slaskie

The baroque church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Bardo Slaskie is dated back to the end of 16th century, it was built in the place of two medieval chapels, where a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary, the oldest preserved romanesque wooden statue in Lower Silesia, used to be worshipped. The statue itself, is almost 50 cm tall, decorated with seven mysterious rows of letters, which have never been solved. The legend says that Virgin Mary appeared to a faithful young man in one of the old medieval chapels and told him that she wants to be worshipped in a special way. Today, the statue sits on top of the altar, dated back to the 18th century. Pilgrims who visit the sanctuary often leave notes of gratitude, out of which a separate chapel was built. It houses a collection of more than 50 paintings, made as tokens of gratitude for Virgin Mary. Next to the church a small well ("Mary's Well") marks a small spring, known for more than 300 years. The spring is believed to have healing powers and the well itself was built in 1893.

The monastery, which lies next to the sanctuary were formerly occupied by the Cistercian brothers and then the buildings were given to the Redemptorists. Now, these buildings serve as a museum of the Cult of the Virgin Mary in Bardo.
