Sanctuary in Fatima - Basilica of the Virgin of the Rosary

Fatima is a city in Portugal, which has become famous in 1917, when the Virgin Mary appeared to three children - Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta. Legend says that the Holy Mother, during the revelation, has passed the Three Secrets of Fatima. The catholic church has officially confirmed these revelations in 1930. During the period between 1928 and 1953 the Basilica of the Virgin of the Rosario was erected and the three shepherd were buried there. Francisco and Jacinta died at an early age and Lucia has devoted her entire, long life to God by becoming a nun. She died on 13th of February 2005 at the age of 97.

In October 2007, the sanctuary in Fatima has been rebuilt and transformed into a bigger monastic complex to better suit thousands of pilgrims that visit it each year. Most of the time was spent on building the new temple of the Trinity. Alexander Tombasis, a Greek architect, is the author of the entire project of rebuilt. The new sanctuary stands about 800 meters from the old Basilica of the Virgin of the Rosary where a sacred statue of the Virgin Mary is located.

In front of the newly built temple two statues have been erected, one of pope Paul VI and the other of John Paul II. The latter was revealed on 13th of October 2007. The statue was designed by professor Czeslaw Dzwigaj, a sculptor from Krakow.

To bind the historic places with the modern vision of the sanctuary and the city, the area between Cova de Iria (a place of revelations, place where the sanctuary is located) and Aljustrel (the village in which the visionaries lived) has been given special protection. Stations of the Way of the Cross have been built in the area and in Aljustrel itself, the original houses of Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco have been preserved. They are an example of the mountain region building style and they enrich the city's cultural value. It is also important because, in the recent years, Fatima is becoming an important centre of religious travelling.

Each year, the sanctuary is visited by 800 thousand pilgrim from across the globe.
