Ludzmierz - Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The church and the parish of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Ludzmierz have been running since 1234. In this year, the bishop of Krakow gives the permission for Teodor Gryfita to build a church to the Virgin Mary. From the 13th till the 19th century, the church was looked after by the Cistercians.

Between 1869 and 1876, in the place of the old, larch-wood church, a new, stone, neo-gothique church was built. The altar and the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Ludzimierz were moved to the new building.

The church was declared a basilica minor in 2001

The origin of the statue of Our Lady of Ludzmierz is unknown. Historians estimate the date at 1400. The blank spots in history are filled with legends, one of which speaks about merchants, travelling to Hungary, to whom the Virgin Mary appeared. The church was built exactly at that spot.

Next to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ludzmierz, a Rosary Garden was created. Its shape creates a way with 20 chapels, each depicting one of the mysteries carved in white marble.

Each day, many pilgrims come to Ludzmierz from all around Poland, Slovakia and Chech Republic. Three masses are conducted daily.
