St. Florian's Basilica

St. Florian's Collegiate Church is a baroque basilica crowned by two towers. In 1185 prince Kazimierz the Just and bishop Gedko from Krakow brought relics of St. Florian to the city and also funded the church. In the 15th century, the church was rebuilt in the Gothic style.

The main altar holds a valuable picture of St. Florian, painted in 1686 by Jan Tricjisz, Jan III Sobieski's official painter. In the side chapel a late Gothic altar of St. John the Baptist and in Jan Kanty's chapel a painting depicting him, made by Tadeusz Kuntze Konicz, attract visitors' attention. The church was looked after by the Polish kings and later by the Academy of Krakow.

For centuries, the church was associated with life of many people. There the remains of queen Ludwika Maria, the wife of Jan Kazimierz were temporarily stored. A coffin with the body of Tadeusz Kosciuszko was also put there. Stanislaw Wyspianski married Teofilia Pytkowna in St. Florian's Basilica and Karol Wojtyla worked there as a vicary from 1949 to 1951.

Here the so called "King's Road", the route of ceremonial entrances and burials of monarchs, begins and leads to the Wawel castle.
